If you are using anything later than Vista, you can persuade it to accept drivers for any version of Windows from Vista onwards. I have a “Designed for XP” Toshiba laptop running Windows 10 which is using Vista drivers for most of its hardware, including the fingerprint sensor.

You need to tell Windows to accept unsigned drivers, and will get dire warnings about security problems when you do.

To install these old drivers, run the normal install program you download or find on the CD that came with the computer, and tell it that, yes, you are happy to install this insecure, unsupported device.

Otherwise, if you are using XP, drivers are available in a number of online archives, or you could try going back through the device maker’s history on the Wayback Machine.
